What is a Wellbeing Audit?

More and more employers are understanding that the wellbeing of employees has a direct impact on their performance and productivity.  Poor health and wellbeing leads to higher absence and low staff retention rates.  Those who remain at work have the added impact of covering for other people, which in turn can lead to a deterioration of their own wellbeing.

I have witnessed first hand how those working in public service, or in professions of care can neglect their own health and wellbeing.  Ironically, always putting customer’s needs first, can have an impact on the ability to care.  I also know that “helping others” is a trait that often continues into people’s personal lives – many workers become the “family-fixer” or the go-to shoulder to cry on at home too. I believe that caring for others begins with caring for yourself. 

The Future of Work Report (2022) shows that 66% of employees want more wellbeing support from their employer.  I focus on resilience building, promoting self care and wellbeing intervention. Primarily I work with emergency services and NHS workers via help help uk, but my approach can be applied to any employer where staff work in a trauma/high stress environments, or where there is a high turnover of staff and high levels of sickness absence.

It begins with an audit.  A Wellbeing Audit takes a snapshot of the wellness of your employees. It includes:

  • Interviews and/or questionnaires with employees using nationally recognised well-being scales, and an understanding of their mental/physical health and workplace mental health triggers.
  • A view of the scale of the retention/absence issues
  • If relevant a complete assessment of the physical environment 
  • A look at work hours, shift patterns and sleep
  • An understanding of dietary and other health concerns and provision.
  • Consideration of specific factors – such as lifting patients, high exposure to trauma/death, risk of being assaulted.
  • Understanding of workplace culture and coping mechanisms and what wellbeing provision is already in place.

The audit acts as a benchmark and is followed by a report of strategic recommendations and suggested wellbeing actions.

This may be group or individual plans and will depend on the size of the organisation or team audited. It is reliant on both the employer and the employee to invest, but help help uk is able to assist and signpost in many of the recommendations.  

After three months, I will check in to see what recommendations have been taken up and offer further support if needed.  

After six months a second audit is carried out to assess if there is an improvement and evidence the success of the wellbeing programme. 

The cost of a wellbeing audit generally starts at £800 – but is very dependant on the size and scale of the organisation or team to be audited.
